Concentration

With my concentration I wanted to delve into the realms of human emotion as well as the dehumanization associated with this. I wanted to utilize geometrical shapes in order to mimic facial tracking software to demonstrate how detached and two dimensional emotions have become and how any sense of expression has almost become detached from society.

How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea?

As I refined and explored my subject matter more my work matured from more generically consecutive images such as 2 and 3 to pieces that expressed more exploration of negative space and creation of new focal points found in images 5, 8, and 10. Most of my images do not reflect a specific emotion in terms of facial expressions but this aids to creating an essence of a severed bond between society and emotion although, most of the images indeed hold underlying hints of a cynical nature. By incorporating the geometrical lines in my pieces I was able to create visual interest due to the contrast it created, slowly the lines formed more intricately and strayed farther from the original facial grids creating an even stronger underlying sense of emotion. This sense of emotion is very evident in image 7 and 10 where I utilized harmony, repetition, and scale to create a sense of chaos and disjointed thoughts but still created a point of focus on the model to reiterate the idea that societies eye needs to be draw towards human emotion and accepting it. By severing the limbs and face of my model I was able to support this idea of dehumanization as the images formed more and more inhumanely the idea of societal rejection was enhanced. Once I created image 6 I wanted to return to using a grid format found in images 1, 4, 9, and 12 with this grid format I was able to incorporate balance within my pieces as well as variety and create an overall stronger sense of emotion.
